Enlisé dans la masse silencieuse et indivisible, l’individu se ferme à l’altérité et refuse de voir les tragédies singulières qui prennent place sur le pas de sa porte. La métaphore de l’ensablement vient alors signifier l’absence d’action civique, le repli sur soi et la fermeture au monde. En revanche, lorsqu’un grain de sable parvient à s’extraire de la masse, il est à lui seul capable de gripper la machine sociale et de rompre son ronronnement quotidien. L’écrivain est ce grain de sable par lequel le regard se dessille et le silence se rompt. En convoquant la métaphore obsédante du sable, Suzanne Jacob pousse le lecteur à changer son regard sur la communauté et à prendre la mesure de la nécessité d’un engagement citoyen. Abstract: If the motif of the sand usually evokes images relating to the “society of leisure”, as Suzanne Jacob likes to call it, it figures in L’Obéissance the immobility of modern society. Stuck in the silent and indivisible mass, the individual closes himself to otherness and refuses to see the singular dramas that unfold at his doorstep. The metaphor of siltation then comes to signify the absence of civic action, withdrawal into oneself and closure to the world. On the other hand, when a grain of sand manages to extract itself from the mass, it is on its own capable of seizing the social machine and breaking its daily hum. The writer is this grain of sand through which the gaze opens and silence is broken. By summoning the haunting metaphor of sand, Suzanne Jacob invites the reader to change their outlook on the community and to take stock of the need for civic engagement.
